Hawkeyes make change at quarterback

September 26, 2000 By admin

A week after defending starting quarterback Scott Mullen Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is making a change. Ferentz announced today that redshirt freshman Jon Buetjer will start in the Hawkeyes Big Ten opener at Indiana. Ferentz admits it was a difficult decision but they felt it was the right time to make the move. Ferentz says they’re trying to do what they think will give the team the best chance to win.Kyle McCann remains listed as the back up and Mullen is listed as the third-string quarterback. He says they don’t have any “scientific evidence” as to why they made the change.Last year in a loss to Indiana, Mullen passed for 426 yards in his first start. Ferentz he did not consider that performance when making the change. He says this is a different Indiana team and every game for the Hawkeyes is a tough one.Ferentz says the coaches believe Buetjer has the talent to become an outstanding quarterback.
