The two major party candidates for Iowa’s first district congressional seat say Americans should be urged to conserve energy. Republican Congressman Jim Leach of Davenport supports federal regulations for carmakers that call for increased fuel efficiency.Leach says America has to comprehend the true energy picture. He says the U-S has only four percent of the world’s crude oil.Democrat Bob Simpson of Iowa City says in addition to conservation measures, the federal government needs to find ways to boost production of alternative energy sources, like wind energy. He says they are only a partial solution to the problem, but are not being used to the maximum. The candidates made their comments during taping of the Iowa Public Television program, “Iowa Press.”
