State leaders work on compromise teacher pay plan

Democrat Governor Tom Vilsack met with Republican legislative leaders Thursday to see if they can combine their two teacher pay plans into one.Vilsack says they had a very constructive meeting, but there is more work to do.Both plans are designed to upgrade teacher pay and institute a way to measure performance. Vilsack says the differences are “nuances” that they can agree on.Vilsack says the differences center on how to gauge the performance of teachers.House Majority Leader Christopher Rants of Sioux City says he’s happy with the progress made Thursday.Rants agrees the differences center on measuring teacher performance.The governor, legislators and the two men who led the efforts to develop the plans met yesterday at the Statehouse.
