Governor Tom Vilsack supports the idea of easing restrictions so people without a teaching license can teach in Iowa classrooms. Vilsack also says it’s time to let existing teachers do apprentice work in their schools which would qualify them for principal and superintendent jobs. He says that would take some of the load off of administrators and superintendents.Vilsack says state officials will have to come up with a new way to pay teachers who are getting “on the job experience” in being a school administrator.Iowa’s facing a teacher and school administrator shortage in the coming decade, and state policymakers are considering ways to boost teacher pay while improving student performance. Vilsack has published a book of comments on the teach pay issue that were made by people who attended the Iowa State Fair.
