Iowa’s largest private college may be undergoing dramatic changes. A committee of Drake University faculty and administrators recommends nearly one-quarter of Drake’s academic programs be closed down. Twenty-nine different programs would be cut if the recommendations were carried out; most of the programs on the chopping block are for masters and doctoral students.Drake’s known for its College of Pharmacy, but the report suggests “pharmacy continuing education” and the “residency in pharmacy” programs be cut because “they are not essential to the mission of the college.” And the report calls for closing down of classroom French, Spanish and German programs, opting instead to encourage students to learn a language by “immersion” through study overseas. Drake president David Maxwell holds a degree in Russian from Grinnell College, but he also studied overseas at Moscow and Leningrad State Universities.
