A plan to expand a federal program that focuses on detecting and treating cancer in low-income women won Senate approval Wednesday. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin sponsored the bill, known as the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act.Previous measures only paid for cancer -screenings- for low-income, uninsured women. The new act would give states the option to provide Medicaid-funded cancer -treatment- to women who are diagnosed. The measure still needs House approval before it goes before President Clinton.Harkin had two sisters, both of whom died of breast cancer. The program has served nearly 87-hundred Iowa women.
