Bush campaigns in Cedar Rapids

October 6, 2000 By admin

Texas Governor George W-Bush watched last night’s Vice Presidential debate from a Cedar Rapids hotel. The Republican Presidential candidate held a rally with supporters earlier at the Eastern Iowa Airport. Bush touched on many of the same issues he spoke about during the first presidential debate on Tuesday night. He reminded supporters there’s a fundamental difference between him and opponent Al Gore. He says Gore’s proposed the “biggest spending increase since 1965.” Bush says Gore’s program trusts the federal government while his program trusts the people of America.Bush will visit a center for troubled youth today in Cedar Rapids and will deliver a speech on drug policy. Last night, Bush outlined several priorities, including Social Security. He guaranteed Social Security for Iowa’s aging population, but says it’s time to start thinking differently about the system to keep it solvent for America’s young people.Bush says Gore doesn’t want Americans to have an asset they can call their own. He promised his tax cut would do more for the nation than Gore’s plan. Bush says Americans are responsible for the projected federal budget surplus and deserve to have some of the money returned to them.Bush criticized the Clinton/Gore administration for the lack of health care reform. His other priorities included: boosting education by giving states more control and building the military by creating a clear mission with the goal to keep the peace.
