It’s Fire Prevention Week in Iowa

Firefighters, dressed in full gear, will be trooping into schools acrossthe state over the next few days as part of Iowa Fire Prevention Week.Bobbie Bishop, spokeswoman for the Central Iowa Red Cross chapter, saysparents need to work with their children to develop a fire escape plan. Shesays it should be practiced at least twice a year. Bishop says to pick asafe meeting place outside the home where family members should gatherduring an emergency. She says Iowans need to take a few other precautions tobe ready for fire. Fire causes more deaths in Iowa than any other disaster.The Iowa Fire Marshal’s Office says 60 Iowans died in fires last year, whilethere were 54 fire deaths in ’98 and 33 deaths in ’97. So far this year, 43Iowans have died in fires.
