The Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of the Social Security Administration is in Iowa today. William Halter is visiting local Social Security offices and is overseeing the distribution of surplus computers.As the Social Security Administration offices in the state update their computers, the old computers are being donated to Iowa schools. Halter says the agency is making a serious effort to grow with the times and offer more of its services online.The website, “www.ssa.gov”, also lets computer users to obtain an online retirement planner. Halter says he hopes citizens will soon be able to file for their retirement benefits on their P-Cs too. Halter says people who are concerned Social Security’s future is at risk should relax.Halter says the life of the program can be extended to 2054 through reforms now being considered. One plan would lock away Social Security revenues and reserve them only for the program, while crediting the interest savings from reducing the national debt to the Social Security Trust Fund.
