Sales tax vote narrowly passes in Winneshiek County

October 17, 2000 By admin

The vote on a local option sales tax in Winneshiek County has been confirmed by a slim margin. County supervisors canvassed the election results and found that it passed by eight votes. The issue had passed in the unofficial count on election night by seven votes. Some of the votes were challenged in the recount and a couple were found to be involved in a registration mix-up by the Department of Transportation. The tax will take effect July 1st and generate an estimated one-point-four million dollars for the county schools.
