UNI professor says we need to talk about the reason for voting

October 17, 2000 By admin

The head of the University of Northern Iowa’s political science department says far too much time’s being spent telling people to vote without explaining why it’s important to do so. U-N-I professor Tom Rice says more time should be spent teaching young people about their “civic duty.” Rice says there’s no one single reason for low voter turnout in modern U-S elections.Rice says Americans are satisfied with their lives and livelihoods, so there’s little motivation to vote. Rice says there are a host of other reasons people don’t vote, like the mobility of our society.Rice says choosing NOT to vote is a viable choice in a democracy.
