During a “town meeting” this afternoon in Des Moines, democrat presidential candidate Al Gore hammered at opponent George Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security. Bush suggests younger workers should be allowed to keep a portion of the payroll taxes they pay to invest on their own. Gore said Bush’s plan would either cut Social Security benefits or bankrupt the system in a generation.Gore said Bush’s gambling that Americans aren’t interested in the specifics.Gore turned to a familiar face in the audience to illustrate his point that America’s elderly depend on Social Security because they don’t want to ask their children for support. 85-year-old Winifred Skinner is the woman who gained national attention for telling Gore last month that she picked up pop cans to supplement her income. Skinner told the audience she doesn’t take help from her son because she wants to stay independent. The Des Moines event was a last-minute addition to Gore’s schedule as he cancelled a rally planned for Kansas City after the death of Missouri’s Governor. Gore flew to Michigan for more campaigning this evening.
