Elementary and High School students across the state are acting as junior ambassadors to the United Nations. It’s part of a celebration of the 55th anniversary of the U-N. Valentina Slater Fominykh, an immigrant to Iowa from the Soviet Union, organized the celebration. She says the students have spent two months learning about diversity and conflict resolution.Over two hundred students are participating statewide, and Fominykh says it’s just a start.Governor Tom Vilsack says the U-N celebration could not come at a more appropriate time — when the Middle East is in turmoil and Iowa is trying to welcome more immigrants.The celebration began yesterday and wraps up today.
