The coordinator of safety programs for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the opening weekend of pheasant hunting season went pretty well. Sonny Satre says there were four accidents reported Saturday and Sunday. There were accidents in Audubon, Jasper, Cedar and Pocahontas Counties. Satre says the accidents all involved hunters being hit with shotgun pellets, but they weren’t major injuries. He says having only four accidents is a pretty good record considering the thousands of hunters in the field. He says the D-N-R estimated 170-thousand hunters turned out on opening weekend. Satre says hunters should continue to play it safe.Satre gives hunter safety programs part of the credit for the lack of hunting accidents.
