The Iowa Civil Liberties Union has raised concerns about a sign in the Ankeny Public Library. I-C-L-U Legal Director, Randal Wilson, says the sign tells patrons they could be guilty of a misdemeanor if they show someone obscene material on the library’s computer. He says it basically threatens patrons.Wilson says the sign misstates Iowa’s obscenity law. He says there is a law that says it’s illegal to display obscene material to a minor, but says nothing about showing the material to another consenting adult. He says the sign is inappropriate as it attempts to force people into self-censorship.Wilson says the I-C-L-U doesn’t get a lot of complaints about this issue. He says it has become a political issue in some campaigns.Wilson says libraries are free to have their own policies, but they should fit within Iowa law.
