Denison becomes a FEMA "Star City"

Denison has been given a “star” for its efforts to change the community’s landscape so floodwaters won’t inundate the western Iowa city. Federal Emergency Management Agency regional director Beth Freeman says Denison has been named one of the “Star” communities in FEMA’s “Project Impact.”Denison is one of just ten “star” communities in the country.Freeman says Denison has done a lot; for example, ring levees were built around critical public utilities.Freeman says over the past few years, Denison received half-a-million dollars in federal funds for their flood-control and flood-fighting projects. A handful of Iowa communities are part of FEMA’s “Project Impact” program. They are Des Moines, Cherokee, LeMars and Council Bluffs, as well as Linn County.
