Senator Tom Harkin says voting booths across America should be standardized. The democrat is sponsoring a bill, along with republican Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, that would set up a commission to address concerns raised by this presidential election. Harkin says voting machines used in some states often don’t count every vote. He says it’s not a problem in a typical election, but says it matters in a close race.Harkin says Americans are “growing increasingly concerned about current voting procedures” due to ballots and the machines used to count them. He says voting machine counters are prone to inaccuracies.Harkin’s bill would set up a bi-partisan panel to do a comprehensive study of voting procedures in federal, state and local elections. He says he’s also willing to consider changes in the Electoral College, including the allocation of votes based on congressional districts.
