While Iowa’s known for the corn and pigs produced here, we’re also one of the nation’s top producers of turkeys — which is big business at this time of year. Paul Hill, chairman of the Iowa Turkey Growers Co-op, says it’s been a banner year for Iowa turkey farmers.Hill farms in the Ellsworth area of Hamilton County. Iowa growers are expected to raise about eight-and-a-half million turkeys this year. Hill says improvements continue to be made in the industry to help turkey farmers make a decent living.Hill says people who are cooking turkeys this week should pick the proper size bird — a family of eight or less should be fine with a hen turkey.
