Abortion pill now available in Iowa

November 21, 2000 By admin

The so-called abortion pill, R-U-4-86, is being made available today to women in Iowa and nationwide. The drug, also known as Mifeprex was approved by the F-D-A back in September. Karen Kubby directs the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City, which plans to offer the pill. Kubby says it gives women another choice when it comes to having an abortion between a surgical and a non-surgical procedure.Critics claim the new pill will make it too easy for women to end an unwanted pregnancy, but Kubby says it’s not as simple as “popping a pill.” Kubby says it’s “an abortion process” that’s similar to a miscarriage. She says the woman will have bleeding and cramping that expels the contents of the uterus, including the embryo.Kubby says they need to make some changes to the clinic to accommodate for the pill’s use. They also plan to take extra precautions to make sure there are no problems for the women. She says the first 50 or so clients will stay at the clinic while they undergo the abortion process.Planned Parenthood also expects to offer the pill around December 1st at its Iowa City, Quad Cities and Des Moines clinics.
