Thousands of people will take to the roads this afternoon on their way to Thanksgiving Day celebrations. They’ll have plenty of company on the road as the Iowa State Patrol makes a special effort to keep things safe.Lu Simpson of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau says they’re conducting a “Special Traffic Enforcement Program” or STEP. Simpson says the extra efforts pay off.as the seatbelt use among Iowans has gone from 69-percent to 78-percent. Simpson expects the heaviest traffic to hit the roadways this afternoon and then again Sunday.
