One of the most sought-after items on this busiest shopping day of the year in Iowa can also be one of the most dangerous. Americans are expected to spend more than 200-million dollars buying about two million shiny, lightweight scooters. The smart ones will also toss scooter safety gear in their carts, according to Elizabeth Mosely at the Insurance Information Institute. That includes a helmet, gloves, wrist guards, and knee and elbow pads. Mosely says scooters aren’t for young kids. She says the scooter craze has resulted in two deaths and 26-thousand injuries nationwide this year, including 94-hundred that required an emergency room visit. Officials say two-thirds of the injuries could’ve been prevented with the proper safety gear.
