Gold coins turn up again in Mason City

December 6, 2000 By admin

More South African gold coins, called Krugerrands, have turned up in a Salvation Army kettle in Mason City. One of the 22-karat gold coins was found in a kettle at K-Mart on Monday, inside a clear plastic case and wrapped in a dollar bill. Later, two more coins were found wrapped in the same way. It’s the fourth year in a row the coins have been dropped in Mason City kettles. They’ve been auctioned off each year, bringing in hundreds, sometimes a few thousand dollars.
