The southeastern Iowa community that’s known as “The Christmas Town of Iowa” is holding its 14th annual Festival of Lights this weekend — and next weekend. Wayland is in Henry County, about half way between Mount Pleasant and Washington.Robert Diers is co-founder of the annual holiday festival, which features horse-drawn buggy rides, a soup supper, caroling and a visit from that red-suited, white-bearded elf. Diers says Wayland became known years ago as “The Christmas Town of Iowa” through a newspaper column that gave them the title because about 90-percent of Wayland’s residents go out of their way to decorate their homes and properties with holiday lights. For more information, surf to “www.henrycountytourism.org” or call 800-421-4282.
