Veterans honored on infamous day

December 7, 2000 By admin

It’s a day that will “live in infamy” and a night that’ll live long in the hearts of some northern Iowa veterans. A graduation ceremony will be held tonight in Mason City to recognize local students who were drafted into World War Two before they graduated from high school. Mason City Community Schools Superintendent Keith Sersland says it’s part of a program from the Iowa Department of Education and the V-A to honor vets.Sersland says they wanted to tie in the graduation ceremonies with war-related holidays — and Pearl Harbor Day seemed ideal.Sersland says a number of people will be honored at tonight’s graduation ceremony, including several gentlemen in their mid-70s.The ceremony takes place tonight at 5 P-M at the Roosevelt Middle School cafeteria. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
