A tiny, controversial and yet revolutionary drug is one of the “Creations” of the past century to go on display soon at the State Historical Building. State Historical Museum curator Jack Lufkin picked the 100 things that will be included in the new exhibit, and he included something he knows will be controversial.”The Pill” was first sold in 1960 and by 1990, 200-million women around the world were taking “the pill” to prevent a pregnancy. Karen Cubby, executive director of the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City, says “the pill” was a milestone for women as it allowed them to legally control their fertility.Kim Gordon of the Iowa Right to Life Committee believes “the pill” ushered in the belief un-planned children are unwanted. Gordon says the pill was developed as a way to control the population.Gordon says children are now often seen as “objects” as a result of “the pill’s” dramatic effect on society.
