Doctors say former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad had a heart attack this morning. Branstad is listed in serious condition at a Des Moines hospital, but a full recovery is expected. Branstad’s spokesman Eric Woolsen says the 54-year-old had been working out at the downtown YMCA early today when he got dizzy and had chest pains while getting into his car. Branstad was taken to the emergency room, and doctors found the middle artery of his heart was 100-percent blocked. He underwent an balloon angioplasty and a stent was placed in the artery to keep it open. Woolsen says Branstad had no previous symptoms of such a condition and Branstad routinely works out every morning.Rob Schweers, a spokesman for the Iowa Heart Center at Iowa Methodist, says most people who’ve undergone this type of procedure return to a normal life. Branstad served as Iowa’s Governor for 16 years and left office in January, 1999. Iowa’s current Governor, Tom Vilsack, issued a statement wishing Branstad a speedy recovery.
