Cattle Enduring the Iowa Cold

If you’re cold, think of the animals that have no where to go — not even amanger in a barn. Joel Brinkmeyer of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association sayscattle often stop gaining weight as they use their energy to try to staywarm.Farmers who turned their cattle out in open corn fields to eat the stalkstubble are out of luck, and are now spending more money on hay.Brinkmeyer says Iowa’s livestock producers are prepared for these kind ofwinter conditions. He says the weather we’ve had so far this winter isn’tcausing and significant concerns yet.
