Iowa’s Secretary of State has an idea he says will save Iowa’s small towns a bit of money. Secretary of State Chet Culver will ask legislators to allow small Iowa towns with 200 or fewer registered voters to conduct elections via the mail. Cities wouldn’t have to hire precinct workers and pay ’em for a day at the polling place — and some printing costs might be saved. Turnout might increase with mail-in ballots, according to Culver. Representative Janet Metcalf, a republican from Urbandale, leads the committee, which will review Culver’s idea.Metcalf and Culver made their comments on Iowa Public Television.
