The Iowa Department of Transportation wants to unload some of the road it’s taking care of to free up money in the department’s budget. Some 800 miles of roadway could be turned over to city or county control. The Executive Director of the Iowa State Association of Counties says each county would have to decide if they wanted to take care of more pavement.I-S-A-C Executive Director Bill Peterson says each of the 99 counties has a five-year road plan. He says that plan would likely dictate whether a county would want to take over a state roadway.The Director of the D-O-T says the state wants to focus on the most heavily traveled highways in the state. Counties and cities would be asked to take over some of the less heavily traveled rural highways that connect small towns.
