Leaders of the Iowa Fish and Wildlife Division plan to ask state legislators to hike hunting and fishing fees. Division chief Al Farris says the rates on those licenses haven’t been raised since 1992 and an increase is overdue.Farris says the higher costs of hunting and fishing licenses are “reasonable” and wouldn’t keep enthusiasts from participating in their favorite sports. The cost of a basic hunting license would go from 12-50 to 16 dollars, while a fishing license would bounce from 10-50 to 16-dollars, along with a mandatory three-dollar fish habitat stamp. Farris says his division of the Department of Natural Resources needs the money to improve Iowa’s hunting and fishing programs and the state’s resources.House Speaker Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs, the top republican in the legislature, isn’t interested in “substantial” increases in license fees.Farris says the license price hikes are also needed just to keep up with inflation. He says it costs more every year for the division to maintain its regular services, ranging from the management of public lands to the stocking of fish to paying the salaries of those who enforce hunting and fishing laws.
