A group of Iowa State University scientists has uncovered a key structure that helps cells divide. Kristen Johansen is one of the researchers who made the discovery in the cells of a fruit fly.The structure discovered in the nucleus of the cell helps form the spindle that’s used by cells to divide into new cells. She says the information is key in stopping abnormal cell division that causes things such as cancer.Johansen, an associate professor of Zoology and Genetics, says other researchers will now expand on what the I-S-U researchers have found.Johansen says we’re in the “Golden Age” of genetic research, with many new discoveries still ahead.Johansen says the I-S-U research has been going on for 10 years.
