Republican legislators plan a repeat of that first-ever “tax freedom weekend” last August. On the first Friday and Saturday of August, shoppers bought clothes and shoes worth 100-bucks or less, without paying the state sales tax. Republican representative Jamie Van Fossen of Davenport will lead the House Ways and Means, tax-writing committee.Van Fossen hopes to expand the list of “sales tax-free” purchases on tax-freedom weekend, 2001, to include computers.Van Fossen says it wouldn’t be just parents buying computers for their kids who would benefit. He says small businesses could take advantage of the tax break too.The state of Pennsylvania recently had a sales-tax-free weekend for computer purchases. Iowa tax officials say it’ll be February before they issue a report on Iowa’s tax freedom weekend in August.
