A Des Moines hospital today introduced a new scanner doctors say can rapidly cut the time it takes to obtain images of the human body. Dr. William Young says the device, known as a computed tomography or C-T scan, uses x-rays and computers to look inside a patient’s body. He says it provides many more images than older machines and is much faster.Young says the new scanner at Mercy Medical Center allows doctors to simultaneously examine multiple images of a patient’s body.Young says the speed of the machine is especially important when dealing with trauma patients, such as an unconscious victim of a car accident. The machine costs one-point-three million dollars. Young says it produces slightly more radiation than older C-T scanners, but not enough that it raises a concern.
