The Iowa State Troopers Association is offering refunds to supporters for false claims made in fundraising letters sent to more than a quarter-million Iowans. Bill Brauch, of the Iowa Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Office, says the state threatened the association with legal action if the refunds weren’t offered.Brauch says it’s not known how many Iowans donated to the Troopers Association last year or how much money was raised. Brauch says the problem was with the 285-thousand letters sent out on behalf of the association by an out-of-state fundraising agency.Brauch says the letter contained claims that were misleading or were “flat-out false” like the claim all donations would go toward the association when in fact all of the money went to the fundraising group.Brauch says Iowans who want a refund should contact the Troopers Association toll free at 877-948-7667.
