About a hundred opponents of large-scale hog confinements descended on the statehouse today to attend a rally. D.G. Partridge of Wall Lake wore a “Stop Factory Farms” sticker on his shirt. Partridge says they want legislative leaders to hear their concerns over hog lots.Partridge says some of his neighbors suffer from being close to a mega hog lot. He says children with asthma are severely impacted by the smells from hog confinement areas.Governor Vilsack today renewed his call for “local control” of hog confinements so local county and city officials could regulate the industry, but republicans oppose the idea. In 1995, the republican-led Iowa Legislature passed a law forbidding county and city ordinances that might restrict hog operations.
