Two state senators from northwest Iowa are pushing to raise the speed limit on the Interstate. Senators John Redwine of Sioux City and Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg introduced a bill today which would hike the speed limit on Iowa’s interstates to 70. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows is personally opposed to raising the limit. But Iverson says if a majority of the 50 state Senators want to make the move, he’ll let the bill come up for a vote in the Senate. House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, supports raising the limit. He says geography plays a role on the issue. He says he hears from people in his district about the high speed limits in border states.Siegrist believes Iowans want a higher speed limit on the Interstates.Siegrist says the roads are designed for traffic moving at 70 miles per hour, and he doesn’t think accident rates will skyrocket if the speed limit’s raised to 70.
