Immigrant advocates in Iowa say legislation President Clinton signed into law late last month could help swell Iowa’s population. Immigration lawyer Jim Benzoni says the new law may enable up to three thousand immigrants in Iowa to become legal residents within a few months.Benzoni is in private practice in Des Moines and does work for the non-profit Iowa Immigration Legal Project. He says once those people get in the pipeline, they can also apply for their family members, easily allowing the number to swell to ten thousand. Benzoni explains some of the basics of the new law.The law allows U-S citizens who are married to undocumented immigrants to apply for their spouses’ residency from within the U-S. Before, immigrants would have to return to their home country for a visa. One catch is — the applications must be submitted by April 30th. Benzoni says many thousands of people in Iowa will be very interested in this new law.To learn more about the statewide series of informational seminars, call Benzoni’s office at (515) 271-5730 or the Iowa Latino Commission at (515) 281-4080.
