This Martin Luther King Junior Day also marks the start of Human Rights week at the University of Iowa. Highlighting today’s event list is a speech by Angela Davis, a political activist and University of Santa Cruz professor. Organizers say Davis will deliver the M-L-K Convocation tonight.Carlos Serrato of the U-of-I Office of Student Life says this week is part of the University’s effort to reach out to everyone on campus and in the community.Events range from promoting a variety of cultures, including: Indians, Iraqis, African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics. There’ll be lectures, movies, speeches and performances that range from blues music to ballet.King’s birthday has been recognized at the U-of-I since 1968 with convocation. Starting in 1993, the U-of-I expanded the observance to include a week of activities open to the public and free of charge.
