One of the legislators mulling a bid for Governor has decided against it. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows made the announcement today. Iverson’s wife, Jean, died of breast cancer two years ago and this past fall Iverson re-married. Iverson says those experiences changed his priorities. Another statehouse leader, House Speaker Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs, is still thinking about the idea of challenging democrat Governor Tom Vilsack in 2002. Iverson was first elected to the legislature in 1988 and has been Senate Majority Leader for the past four years. He plans to seek re-election to the Senate in 2002.
