Top Republican criticizes governor’s letter to Titan Tire

January 18, 2001 By admin

The top statehouse republican says Iowa’s democrat Governor has unwittingly created hostility toward the state from immigrants he’s trying to lure here. Governor Tom Vilsack has made expanding the state’s population, and welcoming immigrants, a priority. There’s backlash from Bosnians, though, over the Governor’s letter that charged Bosnian women working at a Titan Tire plant in Des Moines were being sexually exploited.House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, says hostility toward state government is the by-product of the Governor’s action. He says the Bosnian population feels they haven’t been treated well by the governor’s action.Vilsack has said he has no regrets about writing the letter.
