Senator seeks changes to help educate Americans

January 23, 2001 By admin

As part of what President Bush has declared “Education Week,” Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s introducing two bills that would change the tax code and help ease the cost of going to college. One bill would expand the tax deduction for interest on student loans. It’s now limited to 60 payments or five years. Grassley’s bill would make interest on student loans -permanently- deductible. The other Grassley bill would lighten the tax burden for workers who get tuition help from their employers.Employers can now give employees up to 52-hundred-50 dollars a year in tax-free reimbursement for tuition and books. That benefit is about to expire. Grassley’s bill would make the provision permanent.
