Many Iowans remember the major ice storm that hit the state nearly ten years ago. It caused widespread power outages as ice downed electric lines and even towers. Alliant Energy spokesman John Ruff says the weight of the ice build-up alone can cause power lines to fall from poles. Ruff says people should plan ahead and put together an emergency kit in case the power is cut due to the ice storm. Things inside the kit should include: blankets, flashlights, battery-operated radios, and a fire extinguisher. Ruff says not to use candles because they can start fires during an outage. Ruff says to stay away from and immediately report any downed power lines and power outages to the utility company. Ruff says they have already staffed their dispatch centers to prepare for the possibility of a major ice storm.
