An Iowa State University student is in the hospital, being treated forbacterial meningitis. I-S-U spokesman John McCarroll says privacy lawsprevent him from disclosing where the student lived, who the student is, orwhere he or she is from. University officials are encouraging students whomay have the symptoms of meningitis to visit the student health center.Symptoms are similar to the flu, and can also include nausea, confusion andsleepiness. Bacterial meningitis can cause death in severe cases. It canalso cause brain damage and damage to the ears. McCarroll says somestudents known to been close to the kid who contracted bacterial meningitishave been given an antibiotic.
