Governor signs heating assistance bill with one change

Low income Iowans are getting another 10-million dollars worth of government help to cover their heating bills. Governor Tom Vilsack has approved a bill which shifts 10-million from other state programs to the cash-depleted Low-Income Heating Assistance program. Vilsack item vetoed the portion of the bill that shifted about three-million dollars out of low-income housing programs. Spokesman Joe Shannahan says the governor thought it was like robbing Peter to pay Peter. Vilsack had asked for 20-million dollars for the low-income heating program. Shannahan says they put forth a plausible plan, but he says Republican lawmakers have no interest in solving the problem.Republicans say their bill provided 15-million dollars and met the demands that’ve been placed on the low income heating assistance program.
