The bounding cost of heating our homes and businesses is going to be felt in another way soon. One Iowa Department of Agriculture official says greenhouses are being especially hard-hit by rising natural gas prices, which may be passed along in the cost of Valentine’s Day flowers and plants.Energy costs are up to four times higher for some Iowa greenhouses compared to last year. That means a five thousand-dollar bill last year might be 20-thousand this year.State horticulturist Mike Bevins says it’s possible consumers won’t be so badly hit by the higher prices for Valentine’s Day, but the additional costs will have to come out of someone’s pockets.Bevins says if Iowans don’t get stuck paying more for plants now, they’ll certainly be nailed in a few months when spring planting time rolls around.
