The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is conducting a survey of the chemicals, vapors, dust, smoke and other emissions that’re released daily into the air over the state. Brian Hutchins is leading the study.that’s gathering information from about 610 sources. Hutchins says the sources are broken down into three categories. The categories are: point sources — such as factories and businesses with smokestacks; area sources — things like residential trash burning, and the third category is mobile sources — emissions from cars and trucks. He says it’s the first extensive study of the stuff that’s being released into Iowa’s air.Hutchins says the study will also give the D-N-R an idea of how the emissions spread. The three-year study begins in 30 counties in eastern Iowa and will shift to central Iowa the second year, then to western Iowa in the third year. Scott County in eastern Iowa was studied last year as a pilot project to develop the statewide survey.
