A 37-year-old Sioux City man who’s never held elected office has filed papers to form a committee to explore a bid for Governor. Bob Vander Plaats is a Republican who runs a non-profit agency that provides day care and physical therapy for young adults with brain or spinal injuries. He has been chairman of the Governor’s Council on Brain Injuries, but has never run for office. Vander Plaats says Iowa taxes should be simplified. Vander Plaats was Sheldon High principal from 1993 to ’97 and a principal at Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn High the year before. He was also a coach and business instructor at Jefferson and Boone High Schools.
