Valentine’s Day also marks the start of “National Condom Week.” Sharon Miller of the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross says Condom Week began in 1978.The goal is to make people aware of the risks of being infected with sexually transmitted diseases, and the role condoms can play in preventing the spread of those diseases. Miller says many people think they’re safe from such things in a small rural state like Iowa, which she says is unfortunately not true. Say the age at which kids start having sex has been going down, it now is age 12.Miller says parents and role models need to take the lead in talking to young people about these issues.Miller says the Red Cross offers courses and information to teach people about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases.
