Senate considers resolution to clean up campaigns

February 16, 2001 By admin

Politicians who lie were the subject of a discussion in an Iowa Senate committee. The State Government committee wants a special panel to study how to crack down on candidates who distort the truth or tell out-right lies. Senator Andy McKean of Anamosa says it’s not necessarily about “truth” in campaigning, but about “civility.” He says it’s a clear sign the Senate is concerned about the deteriorating quality of campaigns. But republican Senator Steve King of Kyron says it’ll be difficult to pin the “liar” label on a politician. He says it’s hard to agree on that in a Senate vote. The State Government Committee unanimously passed a resolution on the subject yesterday and the group hopes to get the full Senate to endorse it, soon.
