Three Des Moines firefighters were injured while battling a fire in a house in last night’s extremely frigid temperatures. Chief Ron Wakeham says two firemen were trapped when a porch roof collapsed on top of them. A third fireman was knocked unconscious when a board from the collapsing roof hit him on the head. Once the roof fell, he says firefighting stopped immediately and rescue efforts began. It took a few minutes to get to the men and lift the roof off of them and slide them out. All three of the firefighters have now been released from the hospital, but he says they probably won’t be back to work for a few days. They’re identified as Captain Pat Crane, Captain Matt Porter and firefighter Bryan Hansen. The cause of the fire is still unknown but Chief Wakeham says it was likely accidental.
